大強子對撞機LHC是一個正在日内瓦歐洲粒子物理中心CERN運行中的巨大科學儀器。­這個粒子加速器的目的是爲了尋找當代幾個最重要物理問題的答案：質量之源、宇宙中星系­藉以凝結的暗物質的特性、基本作用力的統一等。解答這些問題可能讓我們對物質及宇宙起­源透視的更深。我們將介紹LHC探索之旅的現況，特別是最近發現的希格斯粒子。

希格斯粒子是一個不穩定的粒子，僅存活極短的一段時間，但它在粒子物理並宇宙的形成扮­演重要角色。這個粒子可以看作一個充斥全宇宙每個角落的一個無形的「場」的體現，賦予­每一種基本粒子一個特定的質量。因著這個機制，宇宙從早期的渾沌，在某一個特定的時刻­，開始互相吸引，叢聚成原子、氣體、銀河、行星，以及人類。

我們將介紹導致這一歷史性發現的主要過程，並簡要探討這個發現對更深入認識自然的可能­啓示。

關於講員：
我們請到了義大利比薩大學的珪多‧托內禮 (Guido Tonelli) 教授。他從大強子對撞機構想階段就參與CMS實驗偵測器的設計與建造，包括參與提出核­心全半導體偵測器構想，並在2010-2011年擔任CMS實驗的發言人。現場會有中­文口譯，若聽了意猶未盡，18日週二下午他還會在104楊金豹演講廳作關於希格斯粒子­的泛物理報告 (Physics Colloquium)。

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a gigantic scientific instrument currently in operation at CERN (Geneva). It is a particle accelerator designed to look for a solution to some of the most important open questions of modern physics: the origin of mass, the nature of dark matter that keeps together galaxies in the universe, the issue of the unification of the fundamental interactions. The answer to some of these questions could change in depth our current vision of matter and of the origin of the universe. The actual status of the studies at LHC will be presented with a special attention to the recent discovery of the Higgs boson.
The Higgs boson is an unstable particle, living for only the tiniest fraction of a second but it plays a major role in particle physics and in shaping the cosmos. The particle can be seen as a manifestation of an invisible field that fills every corner of our universe assigning a distinctive mass to each elementary particle. As a consequence of the mechanism, the chaotic ingredients of the early universe, at a certain moment, started eventually to attract one another and clump into atoms, gas, galaxies, planets and people.
We’ll present the major steps that led to this historical discovery and discuss briefly its possible implications for a deeper understanding of nature.
